Mind Body Music Academy was created to help musicians bridge the gap between wellness and artistry. Traditional music education often neglects the essential connection between mind, body, and musicianship. As a result, musicians of all ages frequently face playing-related pain, injury, and mental health problems. As a classically trained flutist and music teacher, Melissa experienced first-hand the consequences of this incomplete system and was inspired to develop a new holistic music education method. Founded in 2017, Mind Body Music Academy surpasses the boundaries of traditional music education through a unique holistic approach to music lessons, wellness workshops, and coaching services for musicians and music teachers. Our mission is to empower musicians and music teachers with knowledge and tools that support healthy musicianship and maximize artistic impact.
WHY MIND & BODY?
Playing a musical instrument is a skill that completely integrates the mind, body, and spirit. The more one learns about the connections between mind, body, and musicianship, the more obvious it becomes that these concepts and practices cannot be separated. Our minds and bodies are at the core of our music and our artistry. We cannot be effective musicians without learning how to quiet and focus our minds, how to understand and care for our bodies, and how to use music to convey our thoughts and emotions in a creative way. Music education is most comprehensive and effective when used as a vehicle to teach creativity, self-expression, mind-body awareness, goal-setting, and deliberate practice. These are vital 21st century skills, and yet are increasingly neglected from traditional school curricula.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH
Setting Goals Intrinsic motivation is directly linked to the ability to effectively establish and achieve goals. We spend time during each lesson discussing progress toward goals from the previous week and setting new goals for the following week. Using specific goal-setting and achievement strategies, at-home practice sessions are more productive and, in turn, students progress at a quicker pace.
Caring for the Body Musicians are athletes, and at Mind Body Music Academy we are intentional about understanding and caring for our bodies. Physical full-body warm ups before playing are an important part of injury prevention. By warming up at the beginning of each lesson, we are protecting and strengthening our bodies while establishing a routine that transfers to at-home practice.
Focusing the Mind Mental focus is a learned skill that requires practice. To achieve maximum playing potential, musicians must be fully present in their practice and performance. We spend a portion of our lesson time practicing mindfulness and mental focus. Studies show that performers and athletes achieve better results when they use both physical and mental practice, compared with those who use only physical practice.
Activating Creativity Music is a powerful tool for developing and expressing creativity. While all of us are inherently creative, it's important to intentionally support and develop our creativity throughout our lives. Students at Mind Body Music Academy practice creativity through composition, improvisation, and musical interpretation.
Practicing Deliberately Effective practice is the foremost predictor of student success in music, because students learn how to play an instrument by practicing-- not by taking lessons. Deliberate practice is an acquired skill, and learning how to practice actually takes practice! Students at Mind Body Music Academy learn to evaluate and improve their own playing using deliberate practice strategies.
